November Question - A player (A) replaces his ball on the putting green, at the correct spot 30 centimetres from the hole, and the ball stays at rest. As he is about to address the ball, it rolls into the hole. What is the ruling?
....the answer will be supplied in the next newsletter
.

October Question - A player's ball is unplayable behind a tree and so he drops the ball, under penalty of one stroke, within two club-lengths of where it lay not nearer the hole. The ball rolls back into the same unplayable lie as where it originally lay. What is the ruling?
Answer - The player may play the ball as it lies or take another penalty drop for an unplayable ball. See Decision 28 / 3 Ball Dropped Under Unplayable Ball Rule Comes to Rest in Original Position or Another Position at Which Ball Is Unplayable

About What is Happening Right Now

From George Couzens, President,

The new executive of the Lloydminster Golf course held it's first meeting since the annual meeting.

Due to financial problems a big challenge lays ahead. I felt the meeting was very positive with many good ideas being brought forward.

I am looking forward to working with this executive for the benefit of the golf course and the membership.

Excerpts from the Minutes of the Last October Meeting:

GROUNDS REPORT:
1. Snow put a damper on things and was forced to close the course early.
2. Irrigation system was blown out before the snowfall.
3. 60% of fairways sprayed and will be finished shortly
4. All greens were sprayed and were covered today
5. Exh. Assoc. has helped out with a tractor and bobcat. Going to spread flax straw right away.
6. Quite a bit of pruning has been done and might be able to do some stump removal

PROMOTION:
1. George gave Dale some information on the old Legacy Tournament for consideration.
2. Discussed Par 3 tournament, cash tournament, raffle, etc
3. Dale to form a committee to come up with some ideas to promote the course and raise some funds.

Grounds Report (November 2009)

Hello everyone,

In all my years as the Golf Superintendent of this fine course, I have never been through such a year as this. As you are all well aware, weather wise, it was "a year to remember". It started out with a very cold spring, the snow finally disappearing, and then a cold snap came along and wiped out all of our old poa annua fairways, some of the tees, and green surrounds. Overseeding was performed on most of the dead areas but to germinate seed you must have warm weather and moisture (preferably rain). We didn't receive either, so the fairways were a long time coming and invariably the complaints came a bit quicker. It's tough to battle Mother Nature, ask any farmer.

The summer months were no better, and with a constant temperature below the norms we had fewer golfers than expected. This really hurt our bottom line. Who wants to golf when it's cold and windy?

With not a lot of money to work with, we had to put aside some much needed course improvements and projects. We had planned to continue with our bunker drainage and sand additions, plus construct a few more tee boxes. We were unable to start any new projects but on a positive note we did get the blue/gold tee box on #14 completed for the 2009 season.

Late fall was simply amazing! This is when we really got our "Summer" this year and yes it was unbelievable. Certain September days set new records for hottest days ever in many locales and was one of the warmest overall months in years. The only problem was that most golfers were done for the year. The kids were back in school, cabins were being closed up at the lake, hockey camps and practices started etc..........golf was just not on their mind that late in the year.

Last but not least was our "Pre Winter" wakeup call in early October. We had to close the course down on October 5th because the daytime temperatures did not get above 0 degrees and it had snowed at least 2 - 3". This lasted until after Thanksgiving weekend which is when we usually close the course for the year. Thank goodness that the weather improved enough so that we were able to put down the course properly for the much dreaded winter months.

On a final note I would just like to say that even though we were unable to do some of the course improvements or projects this year, I was very happy with the overall maintenance of the course, giving full credit to the exceptional staff that worked tirelessly all season. To those of you who complimented any of my staff members this year, I say Thank You! One compliment goes a long way.
Also I would like to thank all the Members and green fee players that supported the course this year, with hope that the economy turns around soon so we can improve this wonderful venue for the 2010 season.

Yours respectfully,

Don Bilyk
Course Superintendent
