Welcome to the First Lloydminster Golf & Country Club Newsletter

Here is a Rule to ponder

Question - A player's ball is unplayable behind a tree and so he drops the ball, under penalty of one stroke, within two club-lengths of where it lay not nearer the hole. The ball rolls back into the same unplayable lie as where it originally lay. What is the ruling?
....the answer will be supplied in the next newsletter

Grounds
LG&CC Annual Meeting - Grounds Report by Phil Weighill

We have had another year of golf behind us. This year proved to be an extremely tough year on the greens crew as we stopped their budget spending, other than course maintaining, half way through June. By this I mean there was no sand trap work, extra mowing, trimming, pruning, pond work, no spraying for weeds, no fertilizing of the fairways and no extra over seeding of fairways. We just maintained the course and tried to keep it status quo for the year.

I have to apologize if some of you thought that the course was not kept up to our usual standards, but do not blame the greens staff as this was a directors decision not the greens staff decision and although they all did not agree that this was the right thing to do they did what they had to do to slash budget as much as possible and for this I tank them. Don and his staff managed to keep the course in good condition as always and has maintained the grounds all as well as to be expected with what we left him to work with.

Again thanks to Don and his staff for all the hard work and effort that goes into keeping the course playable for members, green fee players, and tournaments for without any of these three entities we would not have such a great course to play on.

Men's Club
LG&CC Annual Meeting - Men's Report by Dwayne Keichinger

Only 2 Men's Nights cancelled due to unfavorable weather. One Men's Night used as fund raiser for Donna Moore Foundation - raised $2500. Sponsorship strong again this year with a number of them continuing into 2010. Overall numbers up this year, averaging over 75. Several nights over 100 and using both nines (if we had 1 nine booked and a few extra, we only took t-times on the other nine)

Wind Up - Saturday, September 12 with average numbers - John Steele and Bill O'Connor won gift certificates towards 2010 membership.

After the wind-up and other commitments, we stand at approximately $5,000 in the bank to start off next year and are looking for a capital project to help out.

Election at wind-up - Dwayne Keichinger, President; Dale "Woody" Woodkey, Vice-President; Cliff Torry, Treasurer; Executive Members At Large - Randy Aston, Bob Baird, Chuck Denis, John Higgins, Terry Hynes, Roy Noble, Richard Starke

Thanks to everyone who helped in some way with the Men's Club 2009, we look forward to growing with the course in 2010.

Ladies Club
LG&CC Annual Meeting - Ladies Club Report by Robin Acton

If I could only choose one word to summarize the 2009 season for the Ladies Golf Club it would be growth. We had a very successful year on all fronts. When the current executive came to be two years ago, it was decided to focus our efforts on three priorities girl’s golf, revitalizing the ladies tournament and building ladies night. There is more we want to achieve in these areas but we are well on our way.

This year saw both an increased number of girl’s taking junior lessons and after many years of absence, a female presence at Junior days. The Ladies Club subsidized junior lessons for all the girls who took advantage of the lessons. We would like to thank Kyle for offering them at such a reasonable price. We would also like to thank our Junior Director, Bill Spence for the effort he made in encouraging junior girls to take advantage of Junior Days.

We saw an increase in the number of ladies attending Monday night Ladies Night over the course of the last season. On average 45 women participated. Fortunately, the weather cooperated with us this last year and only one Ladies Night was cancelled due to poor weather. Our sponsorship has remained steady over the years for which we are most appreciative. We owe a thank you to Vickie Lamb who has been a tireless supporter and organizer of Ladies Night.

In 2008 we took the ladies tournament in a different direction. Our hope that was by making the tournament a charity tournament we would attract more golfers. We also incorporated a scramble event. This year, the second year of the Ladies Charity Open we reaped the rewards. Our tournament was a huge success on several fronts. We raised over $11,643.00 for the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation. From a golf perspective, we had 111 women participate, an increase of over 40 from the first year. From the golf course perspective the Charity format is of benefit as we pay full green fees to the course for all non members thus benefiting the course more than we feel we would be able without the charity format.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t offer congratulations to our 2009 Club Champion, Vickie Lamb and also to the Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Champion, who represented both our course and the province of Saskatchewan at the Senior Women’s National Championship, Joanne Schiller. I would also like to formally thank the Ladies Club Executive, Judy Boxall, Joanne Schiller, Vickie Lamb, and Wendy Stark for all their efforts over the past season.

Presidents Report
LG&CC Annual Meeting - Don Smith

Thank you to Lyle and his staff for the great service, thanks to Jim for all the fantastic food, and to Wendy Pollard who is retiring in October thank you for all the great years of service.

Another thank you to Kyle and the Pro shop staff for their efforts over the year.

A special thank you to Don Bilyk and his staff for the manner in which the course was maintained this year given the budget challenges. Don has trimmed about $80,000 from his budget over the past 2 years which has led to cutbacks in the chemicals and fertilizers he has available and our water situation has been especially challenging as he has had to ration water at times and our well water is not conducive to good turf.

There is good news in the individual accomplishments of some of our golfers, Joanne Schiller won the Sask. Seniors Ladies Amateur, Irene Oddan won the Legion Senior Ladies Sask. Division, Jim Born Jr. won the Sask. Mid Amateur, and he and Shawn Loney made the Saskatchewan Willingdon Cup Team and played in the Canadian Amateur.

The Sask. Amateur tournament was a success and gave our course great exposure in the community.

The bad news is our financial position, we have lost money again this year and need to improve our revenue streams. The Twilight rate was a success and put players on the course at times it used to be empty, we are going to sell new corporate memberships next year, as well as holding a hole in one tournament next May, the Goat wants to hold a cash scramble on October 17. We will also be selling sponsorships/advertising on the golf course to expand our revenue base.

We cannot rely on the City to pay our operational costs, they believe they are subsidizing us through the Communiplex and do not want to contribute further money, which is disappointing given the plan to expand our ponds to accommodate run off from the City’s storm sewers would be mutually beneficial.

The main thing we need is to recapture a sense of community pride and involvement in the golf course, which is a public asset and benefit to the community as a whole. I believe we have gradually lost the involvement and interest of the community at large in our operation, and motivating people to get involved in the future will be a key to our success in the coming years.

I also believe it would be a mistake to have the golf course operations merged with the Communiplex operations as some people have raised with the City. At this point the City sees the Communiplex as a year around facility which the curling club needs to use in the winter, and while it can make money or hold its own in the summer, it loses money in the winter months. That would mean any potential profit from the summer would be used to offset losses in the winter. In the not so distant past, under the Communiplex Board, which was comprised of representatives of the golf and curling clubs, the net result was the golf club subsidizing the Communiplex from money out of our operating budget, and finally with our taking on responsibility for one half of the Communiplex’s accumulated debt, of which the golf club’s share equaled $100,000.00 approximately. The City was generous enough to only ask the golf club to repay $50,000.00 of that amount, but it is a lesson to remember.
